Indoor arena Palacio de Deportes in Madrid where Regin made building automation.

Regin's solutions created functionality for Madrid's largest indoor arena

In Madrid, Palacio Deportes, home to one of the towns basketball team, has been improved over a long period to become a sustainable indoor arena. Through Regin Iberica's products and installations, the arena has become multifunctional and can be used at all hours of the day.

The Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid first opened its doors in 1874. The arena has a capacity of 16,000 visitors.

The Challenges Before Modernization

When Regin Iberica became involved in 2015, the arena faced several challenges. Firstly, it was outdated and was only used sporadically during the week for the basketball team's matches. Furthermore, all its technical functionalities were of an older type, which made system development impossible. All control functions were being phased out of the market, meaning they could not be replaced when they broke down.

The goal was to modernize the arena and open it up to new functions. The vision included the ability to easily change the use from a sports venue to a concert arena at short notice and to efficiently control the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), which varies depending on audience flow.

Regin's Solution and Implementation

Regin Iberica began the integration and installation of Regin's products by first implementing the Arrigo Building Management System (BMS). Regin's BMS communicated seamlessly with the existing BACnet protocol, which simplified the start of the solution's implementation.

Since then, 8,000 I/Os of Regin's freely programmable EXOcompact and EXOclever controllers have been installed in the arena. Over time, the old field products, such as actuators, valves, and detectors, have been replaced with Regin's product range, resulting in an efficient and adaptable HVAC system.

Through Regin Iberica's integration, the goal of creating an arena suitable for different scenarios and contexts—from a sports venue to a conference or concert hall—has been met. This flexibility is now made possible with a single click on a computer.
