Modernization of district heating enables connectivity and efficient control

The installation company Cretec, in partnership with Heimstaden, was commissioned to optimize several rental properties in southern Sweden. Digital connectivity, simple installation and remote control were decisive in choosing Regin as a subcontractor.

“With a complete and pre-programmed installation package for heat control, we get an efficient overall solution for replacing older control equipment”, says Dennis Boman, Technician at Cretec.

Increased possibilities for reduced energy costs

When the project started, one challenge was that several of the properties’ district heating substations were of older models, which hindered energy efficiency. The solution was to upgrade all older substations and install Regin’s package solution for heat controllers, which includes the Exigo heating controller in our CAB-STD cabinet, and other field products such as wireless room sensors and receivers.

"By upgrading the older substations, we have been able to implement demand-controlled functionality and achieve energy savings of at least 10-15% for each individual unit. With wireless room sensors, it also becomes possible to adjust the setpoint curve and regulate energy consumption even further," Dennis continues.

An efficient solution for both installer, operation technician, and property owner.

Something that was important in the project was to facilitate for both installers, operation technicians, and property owners. From an installer's perspective, Dennis believes that it has been of great importance that the solution is pre-programmed.

"With the Exigo heating controller, it is simple to configure, install, and commission. Instead the need of a computer and spending many hours programming, I can directly download the selected application and make property-specific adaptations in the controller, which saves both time and money."

Dennis continues and highlights how Regin's digital cloud service, which functions as a "mini-BMS," has been able to create added value for property owners and operation technicians who are responsible for maintenance in the properties on a daily basis.

"With the support of the cloud service CLOUDigo, it became possible to connect the properties and create a dynamic flow chart with relevant metrics. As the properties in the project are spread over several areas, it was also of great value to handle control and supervision remotely. Now it becomes possible to manage deviations and alarms and gain full control over energy consumption, directly in the digital cloud service," Dennis concludes.
